Fresh impasse in MU leads to fear among students for their career
Students of MU continue their hunger strike protest demanding release of teachers and students of the University
IMPHAL | Sept 25 : The students of the Manipur University stated that their careers are in peril following the impasse that was brought back after the raid by security personnel inside the hostels of the university and arrested teachers and students.
Despite the imposition of total shut down of the varsity since September 21 called by the Joint Students’ Coordination Committee (JSCC), the administration block of the varsity is still functioning by few staffs under the aegis of pro vice-chancellor, K. Yugindro by deploying armed security personnel.
Since Yugindro took the charge of the vice-chancellor, the admission forms counter of the fresh post graduate courses are opened and so far around thousand forms were issued, said a security personnel posted in the administrative block.
The health conditions of the girl hostellers who were on hunger strike since yesterday is getting worst and at least protesters were admitted to JNIMS.
“We denounce the opening of administrative block forcibly and deployment of security forces inside the varsity campus, when the whole section of the varsity are agitating demanding unconditional release of the arrested teachers and students,” said one of the protesters.
Asserting that everyone knows that Pandey appointed professor Yugindro as pro vice-chancellor during his force leave, she asked, “What is the intention of arresting the teachers and students who oppose professor Yugindro from taking the charge of vice-chancellor?”
Unconditional release of the arrested teachers and students and stopping the unofficial pro vice-chancellor to stay in his office will be the only solution to restore normalcy in the varsity, she added.
Asking on what ground large numbers of state and paramilitary forces are deployed inside the varsity complex and why hostellers are restricted and monitored by security personnel, the students questioned, “Is the government planning to turn the varsity into a military base camp?”
“This mental harassment should be stopped immediately. We are students not a militant organisation,” said the students.
Meanwhile, the two students of the varsity who were remanded to police custody were produced before the chief judicial magistrate, Imphal West as their police remand ended today. The court has remanded the two students to judicial custody for 15 days. The students are identified as Laishram Robindro, who is the cultural secretary of Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) and Irom Kennedy. They did not apply for remand objection before the court as they demanded for unconditional release.
In connection with the rumours of not supplying mess in the girl’s hostels of the university, one of the caretakers clarified that regular mess is supplied in the hostels for the students who do not take part in the hunger strike protest.
